Space - As Context

The Illusion of Who We Are

Most of us grow up thinking we’re a body, living in a world, moving through time and space. We say things like “I am here” or “I am thinking” or “I am feeling this.” But if you slow down, just for a moment, and look directly at your own experience—something very simple, very powerful begins to show itself.

Everything you see, hear, think, or feel is always changing. Thoughts come and go. Emotions rise and fall. Sensations move through the body. Even your idea of who you are changes over the years. But there’s something that doesn’t change. Something that doesn’t move. What is it? It’s not a thing. It’s not an object you can point to. It’s the open space that all those thoughts, feelings, and sensations appear in.

Not the kind of space between objects—but a deeper space. An Aware space. A space that knows. Not “knows” as in thinking or analyzing—but knows by simply being present. It’s the clear, silent background of your whole life. You could call it Awareness. You could call it consciousness. But whatever you call it, it’s not separate from you. It is you.

You’re not the things happening—you’re the Aware space they’re happening in. You are the stillness that’s never been hurt, never been excited, never been afraid. All of those things arise like waves on the surface. But the space underneath—the Awareness that sees it all—remains untouched.

When you were a child, that space was there. When you grew up, it was still there. Through every joy, every loss, every thought and identity—you remained as that silent, open presence. You might not have noticed it, because it’s so quiet. So ordinary. But it’s always here. And here’s the most beautiful part: That space—the one you are—is not separate from the space around you. The Aware presence that sees your thoughts is not different from the space the stars shine in. It’s all one field of being. Not made of matter. Not shaped by time. Just this—wide open, clear, present.

So when we say “space,” we’re not talking about some outer container, like a big invisible box where the universe happens. We're talking about the invisible openness that makes all experience possible. Not far away, but closer than anything. Closer even than the sense of “I.” You are that Aware space. You are not in Awareness. Awareness is in you. Or better: there is no "you" apart from it. The world, the body, the thoughts—they appear, move, and fade. But this clear, Aware space? It’s always been here. And it’s what you truly are.

The invitation is simple: Stop looking for it. Notice that you’re looking from it. No effort is needed—because you already are.
